Whereas previous installments of Love Live! began airing mainly in late-night slots and on local independent stations (Tokyo MX, KBS, etc.), NHK E is a national terrestrial network viewed by a wider mainstream and family-friendly audience.
The anime is the first in the franchise to premiere on NHK Educational TV (NHK E) as opposed to being a rebroadcast. It is the third project in terms of main characters performing primarily as a group. It is also the first to focus on five members initially instead of nine. 
This project is the 4th installment in the franchise. On March 5, 2023, after Liella!'s 3rd Live, it was announced that the new members will be announced on Apthrough the Love Live! Days magazine. It was also announced that Liella! will be gaining brand-new members, as apart of a "Gen 3". On October 9, 2022, it was announced that the anime will be getting a third season. Their character designs were also revealed. In April 2022, four new characters were added to the project and are featured in season 2 of the anime. In March 2022, during Liella!'s 2nd Live, it was announced that a second season would air exclusively on NHK-E in July 2022. In February 2021, it was announced that an animated series would air exclusively on NHK-E in July 2021. The project officially began on Decemwith the release of the voice actress lineup. Teaser images and character introductions were later revealed in the Love Live! Days magazine in Volume 7. 
On May 15, 2020, the staff revealed the group's first images and character names. It was first announced during the Love Live! Fest on January 19, 2020.
It was previously referred to as Hello!!! Love Live! by fans prior to the staff reveal of the title. Love Live! Superstar!! ( ラブライブ！スーパースター!!, Rabu Raibu! Sūpāsutā!!) is the fourth project in the Love Live! franchise, set at Yuigaoka Girls' High School.
